Over view Punta Cana Airport
Punta Cana Airport, Punta Cana Airport is a wonderful airport with its palm, frond-thatched roof, roof, keeping visitors cool.
What are we here?
The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo some 4 hours away by road. But Punta Cana receives the lion’s share of visitors who travel to the sandy beaches and beautiful hotels in the area. In 2019, pre pandemic, over 7m tourist used this airport as opposed to less than 4m for the capital.
I went to Punta Cana on my trip to the Dominican Republic, as the flights to this part of the country were significantly cheaper than flights to Santo Domingo.
What is here?
The government strategically placed the airport just 15 minutes from Punta Cana. It is also just 30 minutes to Bávaro to the north. This makes easy to access all the beautiful beaches in the area.
There are also several shopping malls. One of my favourite places is Blue Mall with its upmarket shops and restaurants.
The airport itself:
As you leave the departure area, there is a walkway out to the car park and taxis. The walkway is great, as at the time of writing, sellers and taxi drivers do not enter this area. This means you have a moment to think and organise yourself.
At the far end are toilets. Beyond that there are two small rooms, one houses the car park ticket machines, the other the ATM’s. This, if you have not already organised currency, is very handy. Not all the machines accepted my debit card. But there are 3 different options and at least one of them gave me some Dominican Pesos. USD dollars are accepted and depending on who you talk to you can get some good deals for taxis if you pay this way.
