I’m embarking on a 5-year journey to transform a challenging landscape—a beautiful but sloping plot in a hot climate—into a personal oasis. As a complete beginner, I’ll be documenting my experiences, from successes to failures, to help others avoid the mistakes I might make.

Year 1 focuses on understanding the land through detailed site assessments and laying the groundwork for growth. This includes tracking sunlight, analyzing soil, observing drainage, identifying wind patterns, and cataloging existing plants. I’ll also design the garden layout, plan a suitable watering system, and consider shade structures. Initial soil preparation and planting of hardy, local plants will also take place.

Year 2 involves building infrastructure, such as installing drip irrigation and rainwater collection systems, and adding shade structures. I’ll continue to improve the soil and expand planting with more heat-tolerant plants, including a small vegetable garden.

Year 3 centers on diversification and learning. I’ll introduce a wider variety of plants, implement organic pest control, develop a fertilization schedule, and assess what works best.

By Year 4, the garden should be largely self-sufficient, with a diverse ecosystem and reduced reliance on external resources. I also plan to incorporate additional features like seating areas.

In Year 5, the goal is to have a fully developed garden to enjoy and share.

From what I’ve learned so far, my top tips for hot climate gardening include: watering wisely, choosing local plants, planning for shade, embracing the slope, and learning from other gardeners. I’ll be regularly updating my progress and sharing lessons learned.
